Mr. Pipas declined to say how much Ford's gain was expected to be when the results are officially reported on Monday.

Pipas said he expects U. S. auto industry sales for November and the fourth quarter overall to be at least in the range seen in October.

'The auto-industry downturn appears to be nearing a turning point, ' George Pipas, the top sales analyst at Ford, said in a conference call.

Mr. Pipas said he expected the selling rate for July could be higher than 11 million cars and trucks.

But Pipas 's research with Ford confirms that within the small- car segment , attitude says more about who will buy than demographics .

"The balance has tipped pretty dramatically, " Pipas said of the U. S. auto industry.

Pipas

That meant that the total numbers of new vehicles purchased may fall below the original estimate of 250, 000, according to Mr. Pipas.

"Right now, the economy is not sufficiently expanding to support the level of sales we had in August, " Pipas said.
